One of the skills that I am always working on is the skill of sales writing. It’s really just psychology and how people buy, but knowing this and putting it into writing and graphic design can really help.

The Long Long Sales Letter Once Ruled

Here’s a short history lesson and I am sure you still have seen this around quite a bit. On the Internet, about 4 to 5 years ago, when you wanted to sell something you would have to write a long sales letter.

This would convey all the amazing benefits of your product and do it’s best to convince as many people as possible to purchase your product. These would be very long and hard to write.

Most high level marketers would hire a professional copywriter to help get the job done.

Then Video Started To Get Popular

Video finally began to take over. It’s mainly because storage costs went way down and with different services like YouTube and Amazon s3, you can run a video very quickly. The quality also began to get much better.

Video is much more preferable because it’s more like watching TV. With the average person in America watching about 4 hours of TV a day, you can bet a video would convert higher than a ton of reading.

But It’s All The Same Thing In The End

Whether you use video, or the written word, or both of them… heck maybe you even use free trials and things to help people make their minds up… it’s all selling.

Even in web design, each page should have a goal associated with it. And getting the person to take the right action on that goal is selling.

…That Is What Copywriting Is So Important

I love to personal study copywriting because when you are selling in the written word, you are using all the psychological tricks in the book to get the sale. These are the skills that you can learn to implement in everything you do.

Writing Articles – If you are writing articles, you can learn to use stories better or learn how to weave in an offer for the reader.

Writing Video Scripts – A video script is just a sales letter and you need to know the progression to take somebody through. This will help to build rapport and hopefully make the sale as often as you can.

Talking on Podcasts – Even if you are just doing teaching, you can go in a progression that can help you keep attention better. Everything follows a good sales strategy, even if you’re not selling.

It’s called Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini. It’s really fun to read and it’s a fast read. Even my wife read it and got a lot from it.

Not only will this protect you, but it will legitimize your website. It will make it more real. It sounds pretty crazy but many people have trouble getting started in many of the ways to make money online because it does not feel legit.

If you don’t feel legit doing it, then how can you expect your visitors to feel like it’s a legit thing?

2. Work To Be The Best

This is more a personal philosophy that will help you get started quickly. If you are going to start something, work to be the best at it. That means don’t make a half ass attempt at starting a business… hit your first brick wall… and then quit.

What you should do is watch the last lecture by Randy Pausch. He talked about brick walls being in your way to test how back you want it.

When you set out to be the best, you get fired up to make sure you actually do it. That your website and your products reflect that.

This may seem hazy, but I can help you understand it later.

3. Partner Up If You Can

This is definitely not for everybody but for many people, partnering up is a great opportunity.

I actually partnered with my wife. It seems like a scary proposition to have my wife as my business partner. However, we have strict rules and treat it very much like business.

Having a partner works so well because there is so much to do once you start to succeed, that you need the help. Having somebody else to help you write, send emails, create graphics, and all that jazz is a huge relief.

Of course you can use outsourcers for this, but you better have a decent sized bankroll to invest.

If you’re part of the extremely motivated group… which you probably are if you’re here… you want to take a little more from life. Setting up a home business is the perfect way to do this.

What’s funny is the term home business used to sound strange. But so many businesses these days are based from a home it’s crazy. Earning money from home is not only pretty simple to do, but you can run a multiple million dollar company from your garage.

Here are five fundamental skills you need to make this happen.

Skill 1: A Blood Lust For Success

Another word for this blood lust is persistence. It’s the secret sauce for success on the Internet. As you long as you never give up, you can make any website earn some money. But how do you build persistence?

Easy. You have a proven plan that has worked before for somebody else. You then work the plan concentrating on fundamentals. Do this and you will succeed every time.

What you will not hear much is how you will run into some tough spots. Things won’t work, people won’t buy, your website gets slapped, you name it. However, you need to keep pushing forward or else you’ll never succeed.

Skill 2: A Thirst For Constant Knowledge

99.9% of all entrepreneurs that found success will attribute it to focus. Then blocked all the excess garbage trying to rip their attention from their goals, and just focused on one or two things.

But if focus is another secret for success, how can you have a thirst for constant knowledge?

It’s a necessary balance. You have to keep learning and staying on the cutting edge of what you do. If you do SEO traffic to your website you need to know what the changes are and change with them. If you pay for traffic you need to know the best networks and what new things are happening.

This is what you do in your free time. So rather than watch the latest episode of the 83rd season of American Idol, you get your education up on snub.

Skill 3: Focus

You just learned that focus was key. But it needs to be it’s own skill because I have talked with so many successful online business owners about focus. This includes my own success, but the one thing they all attribute to their success is focusing on one or two sites at the most.

They didn’t try four different methods of driving traffic, they didn’t build 7 websites trying to market them all, and they didn’t keep buying more and more courses.

They focused. They succeed because of it.

It’s huge. Focus.

Skill 4: Time Management

I am a time management junky. I buy every time management tool and course because I am always looking to get more productive. Actually I have cooled down a lot but I have spent a small fortune on productivity apps on the AppStore.

However, I am not talking about that type of time management. I am talking about the big picture time management. You will need to more or less give up television to earn more money from home. There just isn’t enough time to watch the latest episode of Minute to Win It and earn $350 per day.

Would you rather watch some clueless person on Minute to Win It Make a fool of themselves or make real money?

The other thing you need to work on is prioritizing your time. While family is always number one, your business will have to be two or three at the lowest. You’ll see what I mean when you start.

Skill 5: Act Like A Big Shot

Pretend you are a big shot already. I remember when I first started, I was almost embarrassed to market my website. I was freaked out about getting traffic and making sales. I thought my products where not good enough for people.

You will probably face a similar issue. Don’t let it drag you down. Pretend you are big shot because what you are doing is worth it.

How A 27 Year Old Built Cracked $10,000 In Only Five Months From Scratch

This is the true story of a guy named Curtiss. (That is not his real name because he asked to keep it secret).

However, what he did is something you can do too.

He built a brand new website from complete scratch and through hard work marketing his site, he actually cracked making over $10,000 in revenue by his fifth month in business. He is part of our team actually and it’s really a great story which proves you can do it if you are willing to put forth the work.

Step 1: He Found A Market

The first thing that needed to happen was finding a market and product to sell. He decided to work with a drop shipper and sell physical products. This had many advantages over selling information products.

For one when somebody is looking for a physical product they are looking to buy it. Not necessarily now but soon. The means conversions would be higher and he would not have to learn all about copywriting and persuasion.

He worked a great deal with a factory and created a site selling luxury bed sheets.

Step 2: He Had to Build The Site

It took him about three weeks of pretty hard work to build a site. He used a shopping cart software called Cre Loaded. It’s a free solution but he ended up having to hire a programmer to help him.

Looking back he would have much rather used a cart like Big Commerce.

Building the site was not hard, it was taking the time to load up his products and descriptions. This took the most time, but obviously it’s very integral.

Step 3: He Had to Market The Site

This is what he did everyday for the next 4 and a half months. He make a commitment to himself that no matter what he would not go to bed until he at least built five really good links to his website.

He choose SEO traffic and getting ranked in Google because he did not have enough money to test paid traffic. Using an assortment of tools, he built links like a machine everyday, even on weekends.

He actually didn’t pay attention to where his site was or what was really happening because in his second month he made one sale!

Step 4: Provided Amazing Customer Service

He did only make one sale in his second month but it was a small victory. Traffic began to grow and soon he was making about one sale a week.

His next commitment was to provide the best customer service possible. Besides the product, he knew that customer service would separate him from the competition.

It worked well and helped with word of mouth.

All this time though he did not stop building links. He actually got faster at it and was building more links each day that every before.

Rinse and Repeat Step 3 and Step 4

That is exactly what he did.

If you were to think about selling physical products, you would probably think how hard that would be. After all, you have inventory, distributors, manufacturers, price negotiating, and so much more.

How could this possibly be the perfect part time business if you want to make some money online?

It’s actually a lot easier than you think thanks to the drop ship business model.

What Is The Drop Ship Business Model?

Drop shipping is essentially how most online businesses work. What happens is you have the manufacturer who creates the product. They will typically sell their products to a distributor or they could work direct with you.

You and other companies that have retail stores online will work with the distributor, occasionally the manufacturer, and sell their goods. You list their products on your site, but you never have to see them.

When you make an order, you then fulfill the order through the distributor or manufacturer and then send the product directly to the customer. You are just the middle man and your profit is the margin of what you sell it for and what you have to buy it from the distributor, or manufacturer for.

This could be a really high margin and that is what you want to look for obviously.

Why Is This Great If You Are Just Starting Out?

When you are just beginning, you naturally want to look for as little competition as you can. This way it will be much easier to get traffic and essentially makes sales.

How You Can Keep Your Mindset Strong And Be More Productive

As you being your website and you are actively doing something daily to market it and build traffic, you will need to stay strong mentally. Think about this, when you are building links to your website on a daily basis and little has happened, you will need to push through these brick walls.

However, here are some things that we do and that we highly recommend you do to stay sane and to stay motivated.

1. Keep a journal - There is a great Ipad app you should get called Day One. It’s a journalling app that makes it really easy to keep a running journal. It’s amazing how therapeutic it can be to get your daily thoughts out of your head. Don’t knock it until you try it.

However, keeping a journal helps you because you can track your rankings and what you’ve done that day. Over time you’ll begin to see how your efficiency levels improve insanely.

This is the type of information that you can look back and see everything you’ve accomplished. It feels great and it motivates you over those tough brick walls.

2. Get Competitive - The competitive drive is a great way to keep pushing and it helps if you have a friend that you can compete against. A great reason why The Internet Marketing Advantage forum is a great resource to join.
