Scams And Cons

So you think you've found the perfect money machine? Let me guess. You saw a really young looking guy on late night television named Don LaPre and he said you could make lots of money. He even had a great looking, famous blonde named Cindy Margolis who backed him up! Must be on the level, right? Check it out first.

Or perhaps you got one of those emails that claims you'll have a zillion dollars in no time if you send $1 to a dozen people? Think again.

I don't know about you, but I've gotten a dozen handwritten letters from Nigeria claiming they wanted to give me millions of dollars just to use my bank account for a short time. I kept the stamps for my collection and threw the letters away, and now after I know more I'm really glad that I did.

Or perhaps you were naive like me and actually believed for a short time time that envelope stuffing could make you some money? Well, guess what, it's just another scam.

Or how about this scam that recently hit a friend of mine? Your long distance service is suddenly switched to another company without your knowledge. Most people don't look over their bills in detail so never catch it. If they do, then the long distance company argues briefly, then quietly switches you back. What a scam ...

And I'm sure that you've all gotten email chain letters. Best to just throw them away.

In fact, as a rule it's a great idea to just ignore anything that is "too good to be true". Some key phrases to look for include:

  • "You don't think it's possible?"
  • "Wealth and freedom can, and should, be yours"
  • "I want to give back."
  • "These are proven principles that have long been the secret of the rich"
  • "You have to be serious about..."
  • "You have to be willing to pay a price."
  • "Imagine The Possibilities"

Or anything along similar lines. One question I always ask myself is that if this money making scheme was so good why is this person selling it for only $99 or $39 or whatever? Wouldn't he be better off doing what he says and make a lot more money?

Before spending a dime always check your local better business bureau. This organization is great, although they are still working on getting on the web - so you should also call up your local chapter to get all of the data.
